--Bally Awarded 2003 Climate Protection Award

Bally was awarded the 2003 Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award by the US Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, DC.

Bally was given the award, aptly enough, on Earth Day, April 22, 2003.  The key speaker at the event was the EPA's Administrator, Christine Todd Whitman.  Bally earned this honor by being the first in its industry to switch to a zero ozone depleting urethane foam system.

Christine Todd Whitman delivering her remarksMike Coyle, Bally's president, and Ed Treffinger, the man behind Bally's chemical research and development, spearheaded the search for a more environmentally-friendly foaming agent.

According to Mr. Treffinger, the switch was made possible through the cooperation of Bally's management team working together with suppliers.

The new foaming system has theMike Coyle from Bally and Todd from Carpenter additional benefits of having better temperature stability and processing flow.

Mr. Treffinger added that, "Bally has always been a forerunner in the (panel) industry" citing Bally as the first with UL and Factory Mutual approvals for panel construction in addition to earlier gains in ozone-friendly foam systems.

"It's a big achievement", he added.

Following is the EPA synopsis of the event:

Since 1990, 461 individuals, companies, and organizations from 39 countries have earned the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award.

The award recognizes   outstanding contributions to protect the Earth's   ozone layer.  This year's  nine recipients have demonstrated originality and   public purpose, persuasive   moral and organizational leadership, and   elimination of   emissions of ozone-depleting substances. They are from   Argentina, Australia, Germany, Japan, the United States, and Vietnam.   EPA Stratospheric Ozone Protection Awards are particularly prestigious   because nominations   compete globally using previous winners as judges.

Summary of the 2003 Stratospheric Ozone Protection Corporate Award   Winner's Accomplishments:

Bally Refrigerated Boxes is the leader in converting a substantial portion of   their polyurethane foam panel cores product line to blowing agent
HFC-245fa well ahead of the January 1, 2003 production phaseout of   HCFC-141b. Bally has completed the required development, testing, and   approval process for their products and is currently marketing energy   efficient, zero-ODP panels far in advance of their competitors. This work   was done in partnership with their foam system supplier, Carpenter   Company, a leader in the rigid polyurethane pour-in-place foam systems  applications. By working together, Bally and Carpenter have proven that conversion to HFC-245fa blowing agent technology can produce foam products that exceed the environmental performance of HCFC products.
